Jun 15, 12:14am: What's your prediction. Can Obama win despite the latent and overt racism in America? I'm not betting on this one. I only want to hope -- for America and for our future. If Obama can win I believe there is hope for our future as a democracy. I consider myself an American patriot despite my sadness and anger over America's many failings.

We are no longer a democracy but we can fight our way back to democracy if Americans care enough to actively support Obama - with dollars and street support and vote. The predictions that he will win in a landslide seem almost laughable. A black man with little history in American politics winning in a landslide?

I just don't buy it. I think we remain a largely racist culture and that racism will assert itself in the election. But I am not saying Obama can't win, only that it will take real work to put him in the whitehouse.

On a different note, those who are familiar with my dog, Buddy, may want to know he recently survived being hit by a SUV going about 25mph. Here's what happened:

Buddy was on a chain in our backyard (not our usual practice) and he broke his collar in his zeal to chase a neighbors cat that wandered into our backyard. The subsequent chase led through many backyards until Buddy, with me in chase, ran into the next block. At that point he seemed to regain some sense of being in the wrong, and turned to trot back home. However, he crossed a busy street and was quickly hit. I saw the SUV strike Buddy and that image is burned into my brain. I never want to see such a thing again.

I was sure Buddy would go under the wheel and be killed. But somehow he was only pushed hard by the plastic bumper and rolled down the street. He was dazed but came to me when I called him. I was almost ecstatic that he survived. We have since hired a professional trainer to help us with some of these problem behaviors with Buddy. We want him to be with us for as long as possible.
